The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Jos has called for a solidarity rally to address concerns regarding the recent increment in school fees for newly admitted 100-level students.
The decision to organize the rally comes in response to the university management’s silence and lack of willingness to engage in a review of the fee increment, despite repeated efforts by the union to seek dialogue.
According to a press release issued by the SUG President - Jane Kangyang Pwajok, the rally will take place on 23rd January 2025, at 9:00 am, in front of the Administrative Block. The union has invited student leaders, including departmental and faculty presidents, tribal house representatives, and the entire student body, to participate in the peaceful demonstration.
The rally is intended to highlight the potential financial challenges posed by the fee increment and to advocate for accessible and affordable education for all students. Participants have been encouraged to wear all-black attire as a symbol of unity and solidarity.
The movement has gained momentum on social media, with hashtags such as #SolidaritySupport and #NoSchoolFeeIncrementForNewStudents being used to create awareness. Leaders across various departments have shown support for the initiative, urging students to join the rally in large numbers.
The SUG has stressed that the rally will be conducted peacefully and responsibly, with the hope of drawing attention to the concerns of the student body. Updates on the event and its outcomes are expected to follow as the rally unfolds.
