UNIJOS Student leaders Hold Peaceful Rally Over Fees Increment, Issue 6-Hour Ultimatum to Management

In a show of solidarity, student leaders from various departments, faculties, and tribal houses at the University of Jos gathered this morning in front of the Administrative Block to protest the recent increment in school fees for newly admitted 100-level students.

Dressed in all-black attire as a symbol of unity, the students maintained a peaceful atmosphere while expressing their dissatisfaction through solidarity songs and chants. The protest highlighted the growing frustration among the student body, particularly regarding the silence of the Vice-Chancellor on the issue despite earlier appeals for dialogue.

The gathering drew the attention of the university’s Chief Security Officer, who addressed the crowd. He commended the students for their peaceful conduct and urged them to maintain decorum throughout their demonstration.

Shortly after, the Deputy Dean of Students Affairs addressed the students, informing them that the Vice-Chancellor was out of town but had been briefed on their concerns. This response, however, was met with dissatisfaction from the students, who demanded a more immediate resolution to the issue.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) played a key role in calming the crowd. The union thanked the students for their turnout and assured them that negotiations with the school management would proceed accordingly. However, the SUG issued a firm ultimatum, giving the university six hours to respond to their demands. The union warned that if no action was taken, further protests would follow.

The peaceful nature of the protest and the large turnout demonstrated the unity and determination of the student body to advocate for accessible and affordable education. As the six-hour deadline approaches, all eyes remain on the university management’s next steps in addressing the concerns of its students.
