Despite occurring in 2021, a disturbing incident involving a University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) student and a female lecturer has recently started trending, sparking widespread outrage. For clarity, this event took place over a year ago, but its recent resurgence has brought it back into the spotlight.
On November 11, 2021, a 400-level Microbiology student, identified as Captain Walz, allegedly attacked and severely injured his project supervisor, Mrs. Zakariya, after she refused to assist him with his Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) issue. The student had sought her help due to his failure to participate in the compulsory program. Following her refusal, Walz became enraged and assaulted Mrs. Zakariya, leaving her in a coma. She was promptly hospitalized and, according to the institution's Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, is now in a stable condition.
The university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdulkareem Age, visited the victim in the hospital, accompanied by Deans and staff members, condemning the incident as "unfortunate and sad." The institution has assured that justice will be served, and the Vice Chancellor has ordered that the victim's treatment be covered by the university.
